We know how it goes: you've done everything you can to tune your bike to an acceptable level of performance - then you realize your speed isn't going anywhere because the original gearbox only helps you accelerate, instead of getting the power to where you really want it. Always at the limit, your engine puts its heart and soul on the line for you, but... which means stress, wear and tear for the crankcase, bearings and pistons.
A longer derailleur gives you the ability to achieve the same speed - but at a lower rpm, giving you a healthier engine. Give yourself extra range and more power without stressing out on the climbs. You can replace your lost acceleration with a variator reset. The rollers are a little lighter, your clutch is a little harder.
The MALOSSI and POLINI sports gearboxes are mainly straight-geared, so the closing surface is smaller and therefore less friction. Less friction in the transmission means less heat, and you finally get that much-needed power to the rear wheels.
If you drive a PIAGGIO/GILERA engine, please note the following information about gearboxes:
1. PIAGGIO used 18mm toothed bearings until 1996.
2. From 1996 to 1998. PIAGGIO reduced the diameter of the intermediate shaft from 18mm to 17.7mm. To make sure you get the right part, please measure the shaft diameter before ordering.
3. Since 1998/99, PIAGGIO has used a new, larger gear on the crankshaft. A new gear with a smooth internal surface replaced the previously used gear with a serrated internal surface.
Before ordering the transmission for these engines, please measure it accurately and check whether it is splined or smooth stamped.
